"Around 28.35 kg of gold worth Rs. 8.3 crore has been seized in the Coimbatore International Airport (CIA) from 2015-17", GST Commissioner N J Kumaresh said at a press meet conducted at the Central Excise office here.

He lauded the customs officials for being alert and seizing such a huge quantity of gold. He added that these days the smugglers were adopting novel ways to smuggle the precious metal.
Citing the example of the recent incident that was busted by the customs officials, Mr. Kumaresh said "On November 26, Aftab (32), a passenger from Air Arabia flight had concealed 816 gms of gold at the base of a imported kitchen knife set he was carrying in his baggage. The officials smartly busted it and retrieved 816 gm of gold that was converted into match sticks and concealed in the knife set."
"The state-of-the-art scanners installed in the airport helps in identifying even such novel ways of smuggling" he added.
"Subsequently, the customs officials are put on high alert", he noted.
