Coimbatore, Nov. 27
Though not officially announced, it is rumoured that the 105-year-old Sugarcane Breeding Institute (SBI) functioning at Veerakeralam in Coimbatore could be merged with the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow.
Registering their concern over the proposed merger, the District Farmers' Association has submitted a petition to District Collector T.N. Hariharan contending that the closure of the historic and globally renowned SBI could turn detrimental to the farmers cultivating sugarcane in the region.

The farmers also raised slogans against the decision of shifting the base of the SBI functioning here. "Even if the decision to shift it is proposed by the centre, the state government should strongly resist it and revoke the order for the benefit of the farmers," they said.
