Man killed by elephant, people stage road roko


Coimbatore, Nov. 24

Claiming that lack of street lights caused the killing of a 31-year-old man by en elephant, people of Vellarukkampalayam staged a road roko in the outskirts of the city.

According to sources, the victim Shakthivel was out to ease himself early morning on Friday when the incident happened on patta land.

He failed to notice the elephant that was nearby when it attacked him. Shakthivel died on the spot. Locals retrieved the body and sent it to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Later, they staged a road roko claiming that lack of street lights had made it difficult for the victim to see the animal, and hence resulted in his death.

“We are afraid to come out after sunset and this incident has only increased our fears,” they added.

Police officials dispersed the crowd.
