Coimbatore, Nov 23:
Though families and individuals taking the extreme step due to the undue pressure and humiliation heaped on them by loan-sharks is not unusual in Tamil Nadu, the recent deaths due to usury have set the alarm bells ringing.
Back here, a man was locked in his house by a money lender due to prolonged non-payment of dues. Mohan and Vani, a couple from Kamban nagar in Ondipudur, had borrowed Rs. 10 lakh from Aruchamy, a money lender in Somanur by pledging their house document as a security for the loan.

It is said that Mohan had not paid the dues promptly.
On November 22, Aruchamy came to Mohan's home and locked him up in his home for non-payment of dues. Vani who had come home after leaving her children in school was appalled to see her husband locked up. Despite pleading, the money lender refused to open the door. Hence, Vani lodged a complaint with the Singanallur police station on the incident.
The Police arrived at the spot and opened the door. The money lender pleaded that Mohan should either settle the pending dues or sell his house to him, as agreed.
Both the money lender and the defaulter were advised by the Police to take such civil issue to the court instead of orchestrating such unlawful incidents.
The police also assured that legal action against the money lender would be initiated. This incident created a stir in the area as local people were shocked and they condemned the ruthless action of the money lender.
