Government should promote eco-friendly disposables, petition farmers

Coimbatore, Nov. 20

In a novel protest, the members of a farmers' association turned up at the District Collectorate today by holding plates made of banana leaves and arecanut leaves.

"It's true that plastics in all forms are easy to use. Be it plastic carry bags or tea cups, traders and consumers prefer them the most. Sadly, the hidden hazards of prolonged plastic usage is often ignored. Reports say that regular consumption of food using plastic carry bags or cups can cause life-threatening diseases. Hence, considering the health factor and also to promote the livelihood of the farmers, the state government should devise plans to encourage traders and consumers to use plates made out of banana leaves and beetel nut leaves replacing plastics", the farmers' said.

"Governments should implement plans to overall promote eco-friendly disposables", they pleaded.
