The student activist Valarmathi of Periyar University Salem, who has been jailed under the provisions of Goondas act is being released today following a HC verdict.
Various organizations and students have organized a reception for Valarmathi and thronged the central prison complex to receive the student activist who is stepping out of the prison and set to be a free bird.

The two judge bench of Chennai High court, Justice Ponnusamy and Kalaiarasan who heard the habeas corpus petition filed by Mathaiyan, father of Valarmathi had quashed the preventive detention of Valarmathi under Goondas act.
It may be recalled the student activist Valarmathi was arrested while distributing pamphlets to college students to raise against the Hydrocarbon extraction projects in Cauvery delta districts.

Later the Salem Commissioner of Police invoked the Goondas act and Valarmathi she was sent to Coimbatore Central Prison.
The court which sent a notice to Commissioner of Police seeking his explanation for invoking goondas act on a student activist, quashed it when the case came up for hearing at the High court today.
