Water passage blocked in Valankulam tank

Even as the water level in most of the lakes in the city is rising rapidly owing to the abundant rainfall during the monsoon season, some men have been found blocking the passage for water in the lake here on Tuesday.

Close to three men have been using sand packs to block the passage of water from the Western side of the lake from entering the Eastern side. As many as 50 packets of sand have been stocked up beneath the small bridge on the connecting Road to the Ukkadam – Sungam By pass Road.

The city has been receiving ample rainfall over the few days and according to the District Administration more than 20 m of rainfall has been recorded in the city on Monday. This rainfall has seen a rise in the water level in all the lakes and some of them including the Singanallur Lake have started overflowing.

The Valankulam Lake, which was relatively drier than many other lakes in the city was also blessed with showers and was seeing a rapidly rising water level. However, in order to block the water from entering the eastern side, a block has been made by unidentified men.

Sources claim that fishermen who fear that the fish lings might get washed away could have indulged in such activities. “Some fisher men have invested in letting fish ling into the area where there had been water and now that it is raining, there are chances that the fish lings might escape to the other side of the lake. Hence they are trying to prevent this from happening,” said the source.

When contacted, Corporation Commissioner and Special Officer K. Vijayakarthikeyan said that he would look into the issue.
