Coimbatore Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons are organising an Eye donation Awareness Rally, today, the 3rd September 2917. The Eye Donation Fortnight is globally observed every year from August 25th to September 8th to create awareness on eye donation.
The rally was flagged off by Annadurai, Asst. Commissioner, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and Dr.Santhosh, Health officer, Coimbatore Corporation.
D. Chandrasekhar, President, Dr. K. Shreesh Kumar, Secretary, Dr. Rodney J. Morris, Treasurer of Coimbatore Society of Ophthalmic Surgeons, college students and eye bank staff participated in the rally.
According to WHO, there are approximately 45 million blind people across the world, 15 million live in India. On an average, the country needs 2,00,000 corneas in a year, whereas only 44,806 are collected. Despite the efforts by voluntary organizations and government agencies to increase the public awareness during past decade, still the gap between demand and supply of corneas in the country is overwhelming increasing.
However, the Hospital corneal retrieval programme (HCRP) is a program which involves eye donation after death from the hospital premises itself.
