Dengue Fever: Watch out for these symptoms!


"Dengue is a vector-borne endemic disease caused by any one of the four dengue viruses (DENV 1 to 4), which is more prevalent in the urban areas. More than one-third of the population are living in the areas at risk for dengue viral infection.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection transmitted by female Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is also known to spread chikungunya and Zika virus. Symptoms of dengue fever vary according to the severity of the disease. The symptoms usually set about a week after the mosquito bite and last for a maximum of 10 days. The common symptoms include sudden fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, vomiting, skin rash and diarrhea. The symptoms of severe dengue are hypo-tension, gastrointestinal bleeding, seizure, slow heart rate, etc.

It is a must to recognize the symptoms early and seek immediate expert help. Dengue vaccine, Dengvaxia, is registered in several countries, which is for people from 9 to 45 years of age.

Do's and Dont's of Dengue fever:

 * Do not panic. Dengue fever can be cured with timely medical treatment.

 * Effective vector control measures such as preventing stagnant water anywhere near the residence to hinder mosquitoes lay the eggs. Avoid visiting places where water is stagnated.

 * Don't allow accumulation of water and tip out any water that is in plastic containers or other plant pots in and around your place.

 * Use personal protection like mosquito repellants and wear full-sleeve cotton garments.

 * Ensure that windows and doors are mosquito proof and are kept closed.

 * Follow the instructions for proper waste disposal.

 * Generalized spraying of insecticide is an effective method of mosquito control.

 * Keep the areas around your house and drains clean.

 * Create awareness in your locality and educate children about the symptoms of dengue.

 * Do not ignore any fever accompanied by a rash. Visit the doctor immediately when you have a fever with eye pain, joint pain, and skin rash.

 * Once infected, stay hydrated and eat fruits rich in vitamin C as there is a loss of plasma cells.

 * Do not self-medicate (taking Aspirin, Ibuprofen or other antibiotics). Do not use medicines other than those prescribed by your doctor.

 * Do not send your child to school if they have flu-symptoms."
