AVP's role in Globalizing Ayurveda through Innovative Research and Education

The AVP Group has been spearheading important research and educational activities in the field of Ayurveda over the last seven decades. As early as the 1970s, the World Health Organisation sponsored the first-ever study to evaluate the efficacy of Ayurveda in the management of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This unique study was conducted at the AVP hospital in Coimbatore in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) focussing on policy recommendations on globalizing and standardizing Ayurveda Research and Education across countries.

The study became a path-breaking achievement and proved that scientific validation of Ayurvedic clinical practices in comparison with contemporary medicine is possible. Extensive studies are planned in Diabetes, including its regional collaboration with Avinashiligam University, Coimbatore to study Ayurvedic Diabetic wound Management in Collaboration with a European University.

A joint tripartite research agreement signed between Latvia University, Ministry of AYUSH and AVP is expected to facilitate research on Diabetes.

Similarly, initiatives have been taken to study Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare but severe disease condition that drastically reduces the life expectancy of affected individuals to just 26 years.

AVP, in association with Molecular Diagnostics, Counseling, Care and Research Center, Coimbatore and University of Milano, Italy is studying management of this rare condition through Ayurveda. The study funded by AVP so far has revealed that Ayurveda improves the quality of life of these patients.

In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO) had set the benchmarks for professional training in Ayurveda. The legal framework of Switzerland had moulded itself and now Ayurveda treatments have become more accepting of traditional medicine than India.

AVP now has registered 3 products and 23 external oils and massage accessories in the European Union countries. It has  also established clinics in Latvia, Sweden, Turkey, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia, Germany, Bulgaria, and Serbia. Seminars and roadshows are also organised in these countries to create awareness of Ayurveda.

The AVP Group is poised now to sign MoU to conduct joint training programs in USA in tie-up with South California University and in Korea through Indo-Korean collaborators.

Globalizing Ayurveda through Research and Education thus has created interest among scientists across globe. It is one of the few traditional medical systems which has numerous written manuscripts and documents available for study.

After Yoga, Ayurveda is also gaining international acceptance and more and more countries are integrating Ayurveda into their healthcare systems.
