Namma Metro stations, besides playing host to several shops and restaurants, are also home to several startups. An example is Workbench Projects, a fabrication lab at Ulsoor Metro station, which is hosting the Hyperloop India team.
In the next two weeks, a startup hub is expected to be launched at Trinity station.
CandorHUB, a startup incubator by Candor Management Services, a professional employer organization (PEO), had announced a tie-up with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) a few months ago. This hub is almost ready for launch, say officials. It will provide startups with a workspace, mentorship and support services as well as host pitch-day events to help budding startups present their products to investors.
“The BMRCL wants to let out space in other stations to support such startups. It is great to see such projects come up inside stations. We want Namma Metro to be representative of the IT capital of the country. There is a lot of interest from companies and we are considering providing space for startups at other stations as well,” said a senior BMRCL official.
Last year, BMRCL had invited startups to set up shop in Baiyappanahalli, S.V. Road, Indiranagar, Halasuru and Trinity stations. The eligibility criteria to bid for these spaces had been relaxed to attract more applicants. “With increase in footfalls, stations have become attractive as office locations,” the official said.
In the coming weeks, an IT company is expected to launch an incubation centre at Vijaynagar station.
“We will shortly call for tenders to lease space at the Indiranagar station and other stations, which see huge footfalls every day,” the official said.
For companies, the idea of having a workspace at a metro station is appealing. “Imagine catching a metro directly to your office. The issue of last-mile connectivity is solved and companies don't have to shell out exorbitant rates for space in popular locations,” explained Arvind Singh who works with his team in a shared working space in Indiranagar.

Tenders for the land and property survey as well as geo-technical investigation for the proposed Namma Metro route from Nagavara to the Kempegowda International Airport are likely to be finalised soon.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) had called for tenders in June for carrying out the survey and investigation for the proposed Nagavara-Jakkur-Yelahanka route and onwards to the KIA. “Work will start shortly and tenders will be opened this week. The work is scheduled to be completed in six months from the time the tender is awarded,” a senior BMRCL official said.
