The Coimbatore District Administration has flouted tenders for the setting up of temporary Pollution Monitoring Unit (STP) in two places along the Bhavani River here.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palanisamy on Monday announced that two STPs would be set up in two important places along the river bank where sewage mixes with the water.
“The STPs would be set up at a cost of Rs. One crore immediately so as to monitor the pollution in the river for twenty four hours a day,” he said.
The setting of the plant would help monitor the pollution, which is believed to be reduced once the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) scheme is set up at a cost of Rs. 97 crores.
It was initially proposed to collect CSR funds from industries that are on the bunds of the river, however, since the Government has agreed to spend the entire expenditure, the proposal was dropped and tenders were processed on Tuesday.
“We would start and finish the project as soon as possible, which could be of great help before the inception of UGD,” said A. Abdul Raseeth, Commissioner of Mettupalayam Municipality.
