Abandoned cave paintings at Kumittipathi

Tamils are known all over the world for their tradition and culture, and monuments prove helpful in educating generations about the culture of ancient Tamils. However, it is largely a question whether the monuments are really given adequate maintenance.

Around 30 kilo meters away from Coimbatore city lies the famous Pathimalai in the Kumittipathi village. The hillock hosts a variety of cave paintings as old as 2500 years old. But it is a worry for many Tamil lovers that the paintings are not maintained properly.

The paintings are believed to be Petrography paintings drawn in the Megalithic Period. White-ochre limestone and saliva has been used to draw them. Figures of a man sitting on an elephant and other images are found in the paintings.

Locals claim that the place was known early Pandiyan School as the Pandiya Kings used it as an education centre in the early years. However, lack of maintenance had converted the place for a hotspot of illegal activities. The cave in which the paintings are found are filled with liquor bottles, hence proving a hindrance for tourists.

Locals have requested to recover the historic sight and maintain it in its pristine form.
