Monday perhaps was the wettest day in the past few months after rain lashed several parts of the city and its suburbs.
While automatic rain gauges at some places, including Anna University, recorded 3 cm till 7 p.m. on Monday evening, those at locations such as Kolapakkam, Puzhal, Taramani, Poonamallee and Kattupakkam recorded up to 2 cm of rainfall during the same period.
The overcast sky kept the maximum temperature close to normal at 37 degrees Celsius in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam.
Thunderstorms swept across the city in the evening and many places experienced a short but intense rain spell, something that was elusive for several days now.
This year, Chennai has so far received only 3 cm of rainfall against its annual average of 140 cm. The city usually records an average of 14 cm of rainfall till June.
Officials of the Meteorological department said the rain occurred due to convective activity, which is common during June. A trough extending from south coastal Andhra Pradesh to Comorin area also contributed to the intermittent showers. However, such showers are short-lived and cannot be expected to last more than a day.
On Tuesday too, the meteorological department forecasts a generally cloudy sky over the city. Residents may escape from searing heat as the day temperature is expected to be around 35 degrees Celsius.
