As many as 15,000 doctors working in private hospitals in and around the city took out a rally on Friday from the railway station to Freedom Park demanding that the government withdraw the amendments to the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act, 2007, under which the government will fix rates for various procedures in private hospitals and penalise those flouting it.
The protesters said that the proposed amendment was detrimental to doctors. They also criticised Health Minister K.R. Ramesh Kumar for his comment about doctors charging more fees.
Many private hospitals were shut down, while emergency services continued with skeletal staff.
Meanwhile, government hospitals which were functioning normally received more number of patients.
