Putheri lake gets a makeover

Putheri lake in Pallavaram, once a large waterbody, will finally get a new lease of life. The poor rainfall last year had enabled the Pallavaram Municipality to undertake some repair works on the waterbody, albeit belatedly.

The work began with the removal of water hyacinth and slush, and creation of bund.

According to an official of the Municipal Administration Department, ₹10 lakh was allocated for the repair work. “It is nearing completion and the one hour shower last week brought good amount of water into the lake,” he added.

The lake was in the eye of a storm, when Pallavaram Municipality started construction of a bio methanation plant on its banks. A section of residents were pursuing a case with the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal to stall the construction of the plant, as it would harm the water body.

Residents, particularly those living in the vicinity, said that the Pallavaram Municipality went ahead with the construction of the plant, which is not being utilised despite its completion.

They also wanted encroachments to be removed.
