Karnataka blamed for not cooperating in power grid expansion

Union power minister Piyush Goyal blamed the state government for not cooperating with the Centre on expanding the southern grid's transmission network.

Goyal, minister of state with independent charge for power and coal, on Monday said Karnataka was not providing the right of way (RoW) for drawing power lines for the grid because of which the transmission network wasn't expanding at the expected pace. "We have improved the southern grid capacity by 89% and will double it in two to three years. However, Karnataka is not providing RoW for drawing power lines. The media should flag this off to the government," Goyal said.

The minister was addressing a press conference through video conference to highlight Modi government's achievements in the past three years. While he spoke from New Delhi, the media was connected from across cities, including Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Lucknow and Kolkata.

He claimed there is no shortage of power supply in any state, including Karnataka, and if a state wants to purchase power it is available for Rs 2.40 per unit.
