CCMC Commissioner K.Vijayakarthikeyan inaugurates accessible toilet for differently-abled children at Corporation School.


The initiative of Accessible India Campaign piloted by Swarga Foundation has initiated accessibility projects in Corporation School across Coimbatore. The foundation aims at making at least six schools wheel - chair friendly and provide differently-abled children the right to education.

The campaign was launched in association with Coimbatore Corporation on World Disability Day 3rd December 2016 and the construction of the first accessible toilet was started in Ramanathapuram Corporation Boys Higher Secondary School.



Dr.K.Vijaykarthikeyan, Commissioner Coimbatore Municipal Corporation inaugurated the toilet in presence of P.Chandrasekar, District Rehabilitation Officer.



The Swarga Foundation shared “The school has classes from 1 to 12th with around 750 students are studying in it. Nearly 6 differently abled students had to drop out as the school lacked ramp facilities and accessible toilets in its premises. Apart from that this school is also center for various government exams and lot of candidates with disability come to this school and found it very difficult due to lack of accessibility. So under our initiative of Accessible India Campaign, we took up the project of constructing accessible rest rooms in the Corporation School. We constructed the toilet in Ramanathapuram School at a cost of 2 Lakhs. The funds were raised through the Swarga Foundation's calendars sales.

Now the school has ramps to access classrooms in ground floor and a wheel chair accessible toilet fitted with ramp, grab rails, Anglo Indian closet, wider doors and all convenient placement of utilities to enable children on wheel chairs.

Next in pipeline are Corporation schools in R.S Puram,TVS Nagar, P.N.Pudur, Arasur, Ganapthy which will get accessible toilets and help them make disabled friendly.We are also working with one private school in helping them constructing an accessible toilets by making them understands the need of a disabled person. The work has been started in the private school."

Swarga Foundation also flagged of a bike ride of Lalith Kumar from Kanyakumari to Harding La in Kashmir. Differently -abled Lalith has took up this ride to create an awareness about rights of disabled people, spinal injury and road safety. Lalith is a disability rights activist r and founder Love and Acceptance an NGO based of Tiruppur.
