The freak accident in which a 15 year old boy Abhijit, who sustained serious head injuries when he met with an accident at Brookfields mall has raised many questions about the safety standards in these plaza malls, where thousands congregate each day.
Abhijit, was seriously injured when a hand railing iron rod which fell from the third floor hit him hard last Sunday and he was immediately rushed to a private hospital and admitted in an emergency ward.
“The boy was among the crowds in the ground floor watching a launch event participated by Hip Hop Tamizha. Unexpectedly an iron Rod - a hand railing from the third floor got loosened and fell on Abhijit's head. Presumably, the hand railing was secured with a rope as there must be repair works going on” said Priya the boy’s aunt.
“A doctor’s team immediately performed a surgery to take out the broken skull pieces. The boy had seizures twice but thanks to God he has recovered fast and presently Abhijit has been shifted to normal ward and is recuperating", said Abhijit's aunt.
However, the doctors in the hospital have clearly said that the boy has to be under medical observation and he had to miss school for three more months. “The injury and the trauma is of serious nature, though the boy has been recovering fast after the surgery, he needs to be under medical observation for at least three months.
Even though Brookfield Malls management has come forward to bear the costs of medical expenses for the seriously injured boy,it would not lessen the trauma and pain, the boy and his family had to go through due to the accident which was caused by human negligence.
The mall is a public place, where thousands of people visit for shopping and movie-going every day, and so the safety standards has to be up to the mark. And, when repairs or maintenance work is under progress, warning boards indicating the public from accessing such place with caution is mandatory.
"Freak accidents like this one could have been avoided if the railing were not secured with ropes, even during any repair works. Public safety should high on the priority of malls and movie houses in the city" said Priya, the aunt of Abhijit.
