Injambakkam residents want water from Nemmeli soon

Recently, over 100 residents from Injambakkam held a demonstration near Hotel Kailash demanding early supply of water from the Nemmeli desalination plant.

A water tank in Injambakkam is waiting to receive the water from Nemmeli. It is the first such facility to come up in the added areas of the Corporation on Old Mahabalipuram Road and East Coast Road.

Although the work on the water tank was completed in March, Metrowater is yet to commission it.

In February 2017, Metrowater officials told The Hindu Downtown that all major works had been completed and they only had to disinfect the tank before commissioning it.

Four months have elapsed and residents continue to wait for piped water supply.

Many residents have sought the reason for the delay in commissioning the tank.

“We only need to disinfect the tank, which will take one week. Work on connecting pipelines from the water tank to respective streets are almost over,” said a senior engineer overseeing the project when we spoke to him recently.

With a capacity of 35 lakh litres, the water tank will cater to residents of Division 196 and 193, which cover areas such as Bethel Nagar and Thiruvalluvar Salai.

“Over 40,000 people will start getting piped water supply,” said the official.

Residents in this region now rely heavily on taker water supply, which is erratic.

“We get a few pots of water once in two days,” said P. Barnabas, a resident of Bethel Nagar.
