Members of various Trade Unions agitate against Goods and Services Tax


Members of Confederation of All Traders Union staged a demonstration in front of the Taluk office (South) urging the Government to forego the GST taxation system.

“Under the Good and Services tax regime, small restaurants would be levied 5% tax, while the medium and higher end air-conditioned restaurants would invite 12% and 18% respectively. This would be burdensome for the common man and restaurant owners alike” the protestors said.

Condemning the online sale of medicine and drugs are going on with out the prescription of doctors, the protestors said that the GST, single- window system of direct taxes should be scaled down.

Normal life in the city was affected as most of the hoteliers and restaurant owners downed their shutter. Druggists too joined in the bandh. 400 restaurants and 300 small eateries added to 1500 bakeries have shut shop in the city owing to the state wide bandh called by the Tamil Nadu Hoteliers Association protesting against GST taxation system.
