Salem Division of the Southern Railway installs toilets with disabled friendly features

The Indian Railways, under the dynamic leadership of Shri. Narendra Modi and Shri. Suresh Prabhu, has been evidently striving to make railway stations more passenger friendly, particularly for the differently-abled passengers. The Salem Division, Southern Railway, in line with this motive, is taking all the steps in coordination with NGOs, Self Help Groups and other agencies specialised in the field.

As a major step towards this goal, Salem Division has installed 4 Disabled-friendly toilets in Platforms 1-2 and 3-4 of the Coimbatore Junction and the air-conditioned Waiting Halls. The same has been developed in coordination with Swarga Foundation, an NGO involved in the betterment of facilities for the differently abled persons, based in Coimbatore. 4 western style toilets have been installed with grab bars on either side of the closet. A ramp has been provided at the entrance of the lounge and to the toilet, to enable differently-abled passengers to enter the toilet in wheelchair itself. The regular door has been replaced with a sliding door for convenient access.

The facility is being inaugurated today at about 15.00 hrs, in a function being held at the Coimbatore Junction. Sri Hari Shankar Verma, DRM, Salem, is to preside over the function along with Sri Vijuvin, Sr. DCM, Salem, and other Railway Officials of Salem.
