Nilgiris District collector P.Shankar distributed prizes to the prize winners who participated in various competitions held in 59th Fruit show which concluded today.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that fruits, which are the gifts of Mother Nature and roots formed the early food habits of man, and fruits which are the store houses of nutrients including vitamins and minerals have a pride of place in the healthy diet of regimen of all.

While recalling the founding fathers of world famous Sims Park, which 1200 species of plants and 86 families he said it was a British official J.D.Sim and a forest official Murray laid the popular parks and exotic varieties of plants from many continents including America, Europe, Australia, and South America were planted here. However the collector felt that we should popularize the indigenous varieties of pulses like Ragi, soghurn and fruits like foreigners have popularized their fruits and cereals.
There are many 100 year old trees in the park including Pines, Red cedars, Durmast Oak, Butan Cypress and Alter Chinese.
The exhibits, showcased in the fruit show including a replica of Guar, made with 500 kg of grapes, a tonne replica of Jallikattu bull- tamer with bull made with oranges, sweet lime and grapes and exhibits of Kangeyam bull, Nilgiri Tahr, and Rajapalayam dog attracted the attention of all the tourists and visitors to the fruit show. Legislators and officials took part in the function.
