Chairman of Coop Housing Society sentenced to 3 year RI in a graft case

The Special Judge for Vigilance and Anti Corruption Cases (Chief Judicial Magistrate Court) in Kumbakonam convicted and sentenced the chairman of Thirukkkattupalli Cooperative Housing Society to 3 year rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a graft case.

Chinna Raju, a resident of Marudhagudi village, had applied for a housing loan of Rs 1.5 lakh with the Thirukkattupalli Cooperative Housing Society. The society’s chairman Rajamanickam (47) , resident of Gnanam Nagar in Thanjavur, demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 to sanction the loan.

Based on a complaint by Chinna Raju, the sleuths of Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) registered a case and laid a trap. Subsequently, Rajamanickam was caught red-handed by DVAC sleuths when he took the bribe from Chinna Raju on February 23, 2004.

Trial of the case was conducted at the CJM court in Kumbakonam. Hearing the case, the special judge for vigilance and anti corruption case Ms. Thenmozhi found Rajamanickam guilty of charges. Special Judge Thenmozhi, pronouncing her verdict in the case on Friday, ordered Rajamanickam to undergo 3 year rigorous imprisonment besides slapping him a fine of Rs 2,000. In default, he should undergo another six months simple imprisonment, the judge said.
