Butchers agitate demanding ban of new law that bans sale of cattle for slaughter

Protesting against the Central Government’s newly imposed ban on sale of cattle for slaughter and meat the butchers in Coimbatore have resorted to an agitation at Podanur Chettipalayam.

The central government has in a new notification has banned the sale of cattle for slaughter at animal fairs across the country. As per the new notification, passed under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Regulation and Livestock market rules) the cattle including, bulls, cows, buffaloes and camels could not be sold at the animal markets for slaughter.

Animal market committees would be formed oversee the that cattle are not sold for slaughter as per the law.

The stringent rules might affect the prospects of butchers and butcheries who are involved in slaughter and sales of beef. Many conditions and cubs have been laid down by the notification which might affect the livelihood of butchers and the owners of slaughterhouses.

Urging the government to withdraw the draconian law, the butchers said that if the Government does not go back and withdraw the notification, the protests would continue, the agaitatators said.
