A check - dam constructed by "Siruthuli" quenches the thirst of tribals and wild life alike, in Bolampatti range

Thanks to Siruthuli, an environmental organization, which has been in the forefront of renovation of ponds and water conservation measures in the city, a check dam which has been constructed under Namakku Naame Thittam is helping tribals and wildlife alike to quench their thirst in Bolampatti range.

Back in 2008, the Green warriors of Siruthuli have joined hands with and District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) and constructed a check dam across Nandikarai stream, a jungle stream and now it has come to the rescue of to get plenty of drinking water in these prevailing drought conditions.

"Both the tribals and the wildlife in Bolampatti Range are benefited by the check dam in these severe drought conditions". Said Vanitha Mohan, Founder of Siruthuli.

It is common knowledge that the state has been reeling under severe drought conditions and the State has been declared as drought - hit one. Water scarcity has gripped the many parts of Coimbatore district and also the forest ranges from early February on wards.

When late President Abdul Kalam had visited Coimbatore to mark his 80th birthday about 1000 saplings were planted around the dam site. Siruthuli also increased the storage capacity of the check dam to 200 million liters.

Presently the check dam now quenches the thirst of 500 odd tribal families and the wild life including elephants, deer, and leopards. About 60 bore wells and 1600 hectare of agricultural land are also benefited by the check dam.

“Ever since its inception, the dam has not gone dry even during the severe draught conditions and it is indeed a boon for the tribals and wildlife living in Bolampatti range said Mr.Mayilsamy of Siruthuli while speaking to Simplicity.
