A subway near Park station that was closed for nearly three years to facilitate Metro Rail work will be opened in a day or two after having been widened. The facility was reopened a week ago but had to be closed again as it could not accommodate the inflow of commuters. Over the past week, the width of the subway was increased to 9m.
The subway was closed in 2014 for underground construction work on the Chennai Central Metro Rail station and its ancillary buildings. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials said the facility was reopened last Friday but had to be closed within a few hours, the width was only three metres. We expanded it quite a bit and also renovated it. But on Friday, commuters struggled to enter the subway. So, we wanted to further expand the width of the subway to 9m,” an official said.
Foot overbridge
Soon after the subway was closed for construction, a foot overbridge with escalators was installed. Two other subways will also be opened in the area near Chennai Central station. CMRL plans to complete the construction of the station and open it for commuters by the end of the year.
