Tree fall, which endangers the lives of citizens and puts property at risk, is a common phenomenon during rains. But the question of which tree species is most likely to be a casualty to rain and strong wind remains unanswered, as the civic body is yet to undertake a comprehensive tree survey.
Civic experts have for long pointed out the need for such a survey, which they say will not only help them identify weak trees, but also species that can withstand the vagaries of Bengaluru’s monsoon.
Appu Rao, Deputy Conservator of Forests, BBMP Forest Cell, told The Hindu that the proposal for a tree survey has been submitted to the State government. “Once the government approves, a tender will be floated and only then can the identification process begin,” he said, adding that the survey cannot be taken up during the monsoon.
The forest cell is also contemplating deploy trainee foresters for the survey. “This is still in the proposal stage. This experiment is a win-win for both the trainees, who will get field exposure, and the BBMP, which will save on the cost of the survey.”
