Following the success of Car- Free Sunday on Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar, The Hindu launched a similar initiative on Marina Beach on Sunday.
The day commenced at 5.45 a.m. and the whole stretch of service lane from Gandhi statue to Kannagi statue was cordoned off as people from all walks of life and age groups flocked to participate in a variety of activities. They were either busy playing chess, snakes and ladders, tug of war, skating or reading at The Hindu reading zone. Activities such as Zumba, yoga and football too attracted crowds.
There was also a display of The Hindu’s archived cartoons. The event was inaugurated by Mylapore Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Balakrishnan, who appreciated the efforts of the organisers and was later spotted quietly reading in the zone.
The event will now be held on the Marina and the Elliots every week. The initiative is done jointly with Greater Chennai Corporation and Chennai City Police.
