A male elephant was found dead today in the Irunbukarai village of Sirumugai range. It was found in the pattaland owned by Mr.Manickam. The postmortem was conducted by Dr.Ashokan in the presence of the District Forest Officers and other forest rangers.
While speaking to SimpliCity, District Forest Officer, Mr. Ramasubramaniam said, “500 acres of land at Irumbukarai village is owned by South Indian Viscose. Amidst the commercially used lands, farmers own small patches. Manickam, one of the farmers who owns a patch of land, grows fodder crops and rears milk-giving animals. This Elephant regularly used to visit these lands in order to graze. While most farmers supply electricity through batteries to the fence, Manickam directly supplied electricity to the fencing to keep animals away. This caused the death of the elephant.”
Manickam will be remanded to police custody and further investigations will be conducted.
