A major fire broke out at Vellalur dumpyard covering 3.1 acres, prompting Coimbatore Corporation to launch massive firefighting operation led by Commissioner with 100 personnel, 8 fire tenders, 36 water tankers. Additional assistance received from Tiruppur and Pollachi municipalities in the emergency response effort.

Coimbatore: A massive fire broke out at the Vellalur dumpyard under Coimbatore Corporation Ward No. 99 in the early hours of yesterday (23.08.2026) at approximately 5 AM. The fire erupted in an area covering approximately 3.1 acres located behind the fertilizer storage facility, where garden waste and water hyacinth waste were stored.

Upon receiving information about the fire incident, Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja IAS immediately rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. Corporation officials and workers coordinated with the Fire and Rescue Services Department to swiftly undertake firefighting operations. A complaint was registered at D3 Bothanur Police Station.

In this massive firefighting and containment operation, a total of 30 vehicles were deployed including 8 Fire and Rescue Services vehicles, 7 Coimbatore Corporation drinking water lorries, 7 Hitachi earth-moving vehicles, and 8 private water lorries. Additional assistance was sought from other local bodies to expedite the firefighting efforts.

Three water vehicles were obtained from Tiruppur Corporation and three water vehicles from Pollachi Municipality for the firefighting operation. A total of 100 Corporation workers were engaged in this firefighting effort.

Coordination activities were carried out at the incident site under the leadership of the Corporation Commissioner. Corporation officials, engineers, health officers, and other field workers continued working through the night. High-power lights were installed, generators were used, and additional vehicles and personnel were deployed to intensify the firefighting operations.

In the fire-affected areas, Hitachi vehicles were used to segregate and remove waste, water was continuously sprayed, and soil was dumped in necessary locations to control the fire. Firefighting operations were also conducted using the police department's Varun water cannon vehicle.

To prevent the fire from spreading further, all precautionary measures were undertaken on a war footing, including isolating the fire-affected areas, continuous water spraying, soil dumping, and removal of easily combustible waste. Fire and Rescue Services and Corporation officials continued to camp at the incident site and monitor the situation.

Notably, when a 20-member medical team from the City Health Division conducted field surveys in the surrounding areas, no respiratory-related health issues were detected among the public.

Today (24.08.2026), Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja IAS, along with Minister Sampathkumar and Minister Vignesh, visited the Vellalur dumpyard premises and inspected to confirm that the fire has been completely brought under control.
