A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by Race Course police in connection with the murder of Shanthi (58), who was found beaten to death while alone at her house in Pappanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, on August 12.
Coimbatore: A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by Race Course police in connection with the murder of 58-year-old Shanthi, who was found beaten to death while alone at her house in the Karuppakkal Thottam area of Pappanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore, on August 12.
Shanthi, who worked as a domestic help and cook, lived with her son Raja (35) in Pappanaickenpalayam. Her daughter, Amutha, resides with her family in Palakkad.
On August 12, Shanthi returned home around noon after finishing work and was alone at the time. Later that evening, when Raja returned home, he found his mother lying dead after sustaining injuries in an assault. He immediately alerted the police.
Race Course police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Coimbatore Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A murder case was registered and a detailed investigation was launched to identify the person responsible.
Based on the instructions of the Police Commissioner, three special teams were formed to investigate the case. Police also examined CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area in an effort to trace the movements of the suspect before and after the incident.
A breakthrough came when footage from a shop in the vicinity showed a person walking with Shanthi’s handbag on the day of the murder. Following the lead, police intensified their investigation and identified the person as a 17-year-old boy. Police also found that Shanthi’s mobile phone had allegedly been stolen.
The special teams subsequently traced and apprehended the boy for questioning. During the inquiry, he allegedly confessed to assaulting Shanthi with a wooden rod, resulting in her death, police said.
The boy was subsequently arrested and lodged in a juvenile observation home.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the murder, including whether Shanthi was sexually assaulted and the reason the boy had gone to her house at the time of the incident.
