Southwest Monsoon Boosts Water Levels in Coimbatore District Dams; Significant Inflow and Discharge Reported

Water levels rise in three major dams across Coimbatore district on July 17 due to southwest monsoon rainfall. Aliyar, Parambikulam, and Sholayar dams report increased inflow with water being discharged for irrigation and downstream requirements, officials confirm.

Coimbatore: Water levels in three major dams in Coimbatore district have shown significant improvement following continuous southwest monsoon rainfall in their catchment areas, according to Water Resources Department officials on July 17.

The Aliyar Dam, located near Anaimalai with a total capacity of 120 feet, currently stands at 56.2 feet as of July 17. The dam is receiving an inflow of 301 cubic feet per second (cusecs) while discharging 227 cusecs to meet downstream water requirements.

Parambikulam Dam, situated near Pollachi with a maximum capacity of 72 feet, has recorded a water level of 19.28 feet as of July 17. The dam is experiencing substantial inflow of 1,172 cusecs due to consistent rainfall in the catchment areas, while 810 cusecs is being released for irrigation purposes.

The Sholayar Dam in Valparai, with a full capacity of 160 feet, currently holds water at 91.92 feet. The reservoir is receiving a healthy inflow of 811 cusecs, with 1,355 cusecs being discharged to maintain optimal water levels and meet agricultural demands in the region.

Water Resources Department officials stated that the continued southwest monsoon rainfall in the catchment areas is expected to further improve water storage levels in these dams. The increased water availability will benefit farmers in the region and ensure adequate water supply for various purposes in the coming months.

Authorities are closely monitoring the water levels and inflow patterns to manage the discharge effectively and prevent any overflow situations while maximizing water conservation for the dry season ahead.
