Eco Club students, Corporate workers, Volunteers and staff of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on Sunday collected more than 300 liquor bottles the from sides of the Forest Road from Mettupalayam leading to Kotagiri here in the District.

The stretch of three kilo meter Road is a part of the alternative route to Nilgris via Kotagiri sees lesser users in comparison with the Ooty Main Road from Mettupalayam to Nilgris via Coonoor. However, summer season sees more traffic and many perpetrators are seen consuming liquor and leaving empty liquor bottles and plastic covers on the sides of the Road.
Despite being an important elephant moving area with the Kallar – Kandhapallam Elephant Corridor occurring in the region, tourist stoppage has become a spot of bother in the area and the purpose of sign boards have become futile.

In order to clean the area of plastic of empty liquor bottles that could harm wild animals, members of the Wildlife Nature Conservation Trust (WNCT) along with Eco Club students of the Rathinam Group of Educational Institutions, Staff of the ZF Wind Power private limited and Forest Department Personnel joined together.
The team collected more than 300 liquor bottles from the Forest Department Checkpost till the first Air pin bend from 09.00 am till 3.00 pm. They also collected upto 300 kg of plastic wastes and disposed them at a dump yard nearby.

More than 60 members participated in the drive. A senior official from the Coimbatore Division of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department urged tourists to take responsibility and not litter inside forest areas.
