CODISSIA Raises MSME Concerns with Vice President Over Rising Input and Energy Costs

A delegation of present and former CODISSIA office-bearers met Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan in New Delhi and highlighted the challenges faced by MSMEs. The association also sought policy support for rooftop solar adoption to reduce electricity expenses.

Coimbatore: A delegation comprising present and former office-bearers of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) met Vice President of India C.P. Radhakrishnan at his residence in New Delhi and discussed key challenges facing the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector.

The delegation, led by CODISSIA President Karthikeyan and past presidents of the association, drew attention to the sharp rise in raw material prices, particularly steel, and its impact on MSMEs. It noted that raw materials account for a substantial share of production costs and that recent price increases have placed significant financial pressure on small industries.

The association said MSMEs are already contending with geopolitical uncertainties, supply chain disruptions, rising energy costs, limited access to affordable credit, delayed payments, shortages of skilled manpower, and inadequate technology and testing infrastructure. Further escalation in raw material prices, it said, could adversely affect the competitiveness and sustainability of the sector.

To address rising power costs, CODISSIA proposed a dedicated government scheme to promote rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations for MSME units. The association observed that with power demand growing by nearly 8 per cent annually, encouraging decentralised solar generation could offer a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to large-scale power projects that require substantial capital investment.

The delegation said wider adoption of rooftop solar systems would provide MSMEs with a long-term solution to escalating electricity costs, while improving their competitiveness, productivity, and resilience.
