A 20-year-old college student from Dindigul was threatened by a four-member gang in Coimbatore's Kuniyamuthur area. The victim was forced to transfer ₹47,000 online and robbed of his silver chain and mobile phone.
Coimbatore: A 20-year-old college student from Dindigul was allegedly threatened at knifepoint by a four-member gang and forced to transfer ₹47,000 online before being robbed of his silver chain and mobile phone in Coimbatore's Kuniyamuthur area on June 5. Police have registered a robbery case and launched an intensive search for the accused.
According to police, Kathir (20), a native of Oddanchatram in Dindigul district, is currently pursuing B-tech at a private college in Coimbatore. On June 5, he had visited the residence of a friend in Kuniyamuthur area.
At around 6.15 pm, four persons identified as Rizwan, Sahir, Jaganath and Abus allegedly confronted him. The accused are said to have verbally abused the student, ordered him to kneel down and intimidated him by claiming that one of them was carrying a knife.
Police sources said the gang allegedly threatened, assaulted Kathir and demanded money. Fearing for his safety, the student reportedly transferred ₹47,000 from his bank account to an account specified by the accused using online banking.
Thegang also allegedly snatched the student's silver chain and his Vivo T2 Pro mobile phone before fleeing from the spot, leaving the victim traumatised.
Following the incident, Kathir lodged a complaint with the Kuniyamuthur Police Station. Based on the complaint, police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to robbery, criminal intimidation, extortion and other offences.
Police officials said investigations are underway to trace the accused and recover the stolen cash and valuables.
