Goondas Act Invoked Against Odisha Native Held With 7 Kg Ganja in Coimbatore

A 24-year-old Odisha native arrested with 7 kg of ganja in Coimbatore has been detained under the Goondas Act. The detention order was issued by the District Collector following a recommendation from the Superintendent of Police, citing threats to public order and public health.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district administration has detained a 24-year-old man under the Goondas Act in connection with a ganja trafficking case.

The accused, Sameera Behara (24), a native of Odisha was arrested by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW), Periyanaickenpalayam, on May 6, 2026. Police said he was found in possession of 7 kilograms of ganja, allegedly intended for illegal sale. Following his arrest, he was remanded to judicial custody.

In view of his alleged involvement in activities affecting public order and public health, Coimbatore Superintendent of Police A. Pavan Kumar, IPS, recommended that preventive detention proceedings be initiated against him under the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (Goondas Act).

The District Collector of Coimbatore, Pavan Kumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, subsequently invoked the Goondas Act against Sameera Behara, leading to his detention in prison.

The Superintendent of Police stated that strict action, including detention under the Goondas Act, would continue to be taken against individuals involved in drug trafficking and other activities that pose a threat to public peace and public health.
