Police have approached the Coimbatore POCSO Court seeking five days’ custody of Karthik and Mohanraj, the two accused arrested in connection with the sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur. The petition is expected to come up for hearing shortly.
Coimbatore: Police have filed a petition before the POCSO Court in Coimbatore seeking permission to take into custody two men arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Coimbatore for further investigation.
The accused, identified as Karthik and Mohanraj, were arrested as part of the investigation into the crime that shocked the state. During the course of his arrest, Karthik allegedly attempted to escape from police custody by jumping from a building, resulting in fractures to his arms and leg.
Following their arrest, both accused were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody at the Coimbatore Central Prison. While in prison, Karthik was reportedly attacked by five fellow inmates during a meal break using plates, tumblers and spoons. He sustained multiple injuries and was subsequently admitted to the Coimbatore Government Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.
In connection with the prison assault, the five inmates involved were later transferred to prisons in Tiruchirappalli and Vellore.
Meanwhile, police have decided to seek custodial interrogation of both Karthik and Mohanraj to gather additional evidence in the case. Accordingly, police on Monday filed a petition before the Coimbatore POCSO Court seeking permission to question the accused in police custody for five days.
The petition is expected to be heard shortly. Police officials said that custodial interrogation could help uncover further details related to the case and strengthen the investigation, besides aiding in the preparation of the charge sheet.
