Coimbatore Commissioner, Dr.K.VijayaKarthikeyan, has requested people not to hold non-cooperative activities on roads causing blockades. The south zone of Coimbatore district had been facing water shortage issues off late. “This year the seasonal showers have been scarce, hence there is a shortage of drinking water. In the Kurichi region, we are trying to resolve the issues by proving them with 35 Lakh liters from Aliyar dam and 40 Lakh liters from Pillur dam. The Coimbatore- Pollachi road is now being reconstructed into a highway. Due to this, water received from pipelines in this region has been blocked as well.
In the water pumping station and head office, electricity is not properly supplied; this is why they have not been able to supply water regularly. Even in places such as the Pillur dam, heavy winds cause trees to fall destructing water and electricity channels. Groundwater is also decreasing, wells are unable to provide sufficient water. Drinking water is now being carried in Lorries to places with water scarcity.
We are also doing the best we can; the rest is nature’s play. People need to understand this and stop staging non-cooperative activities on roads that cause blockades. Rather, they should use drinking water precariously and save water.”
