Senior IPS Officer Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal Takes Charge as Tamil Nadu DGP

Senior IPS officer Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force (HoPF) of Tamil Nadu. He previously served as the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has appointed senior IPS officer Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal as the new Director General of Police (DGP) and Head of Police Force (HoPF).

A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Aggarwal was serving as Special Director General (Human Rights) in the Border Security Force (BSF) before being appointed to head the State police force.

During his tenure as Chennai Police Commissioner amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he introduced several initiatives, including the ‘Drive Against Drugs’ campaign and the ‘Kaaval Karangal’ programme.

In accordance with the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court in the Prakash Singh case, Aggarwal will serve as DGP and Head of Police Force for a fixed tenure of two years from the date he assumes office.

Over the course of his career, he has been honoured with the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Medal in recognition of his contributions and leadership in policing.
