Coimbatore: The Goondas Act has been invoked against the two accused in the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl from Pallapalayam near Sulur — a case that sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu.
Karthik (33), a native of Nagapattinam, and his associate Mohankumar (30), from Bharathipuram, were arrested by Sulur police within 24 hours of the crime. The two have been charged under POCSO and other stringent sections of law.
Acting on a special recommendation submitted by Coimbatore Range Inspector General of Police Ramya Bharathi, District Collector Pawan Kumar Giriyappanar has ordered that both accused be detained under the Goondas Act for a period of one year, to prevent them from obtaining bail and being released.
Karthik, who attempted to escape from police custody by jumping from a building, is currently undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital for fractures to his hands and legs. Mohankumar is being held in judicial custody at the Coimbatore Central Prison.
The swift arrest of both accused within 24 hours, followed by prompt action under the Goondas Act, has drawn widespread appreciation from the public and social activists.
