Scrapping of ranks deprives TN students of direct admission into BITS

THANJVAUR: With the State education department now scrapping the announcement of ranks in higher secondary exam, the students from Tamil Nadu stand to lose an opportunity to directly get admission without entrance exam into Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), a premier engineering college, at Pilani.

BITS Pilani, which conducts an online entrance exam to admit students to its campuses in Goa, Hyderabad and Pilani, is among the more sought after colleges in the country. Since 2005, the college has been offering direct entry into its courses to the topper of every state board, the seven regional zones under the CBSE, the ICSE and other boards in the country.

These toppers can apply to any of the programmes that they wish to pursue in BITS Pilani.

To be eligible for direct admission, candidates must have a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) or a minimum aggregate of 75% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) with at least 60% marks in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology subjects.

With the government having been scrapped the ranks, the students from Tamil Nadu have been deprived of the opportunity to directly get into the premier institution. They have now no other option but appear for the online entrance examination –BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test) to get admission into it, says Mohamed Khader Meeran, an activist, of Tiruchy.

“Apart from this, these students will now stand to lose the special scholarships, cash prizes being offered to state toppers by many deemed universities including SRM University, and the prizes and monetary assistances being offered to toppers  by many philanthropists, Educational  and Charitable Trusts based on their district or state ranks”, Mohamed Khader Meeran said.
