Evening Thunderstorms Likely Across Coimbatore Over Next 3 Days

Coimbatore to experience hot mornings and increasing evening thunderstorm activity over the next three days, with clouds building from Western Ghats and rain expected between 4 PM and 7 PM in several parts of the district.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore city is expected to witness a shift in weather pattern over the next few days, with increasing chances of evening thunderstorms following continued daytime heat. Weather observations indicate that while mornings will remain hot and partly cloudy, conditions are becoming favourable for localized rain during late afternoons and evenings.

On Saturday, the city is likely to remain dry until early afternoon, with temperatures rising steadily under partly cloudy skies. However, between 3 PM and 5 PM, cloud formation is expected to intensify, particularly over the western parts of the district near the Western Ghats. This could lead to short-duration thunderstorms developing between 5 PM and 7 PM in parts of the city.

Similar weather conditions are expected on Sunday, with a higher probability of rainfall. Forecast models indicate stronger cloud buildup during the afternoon hours, increasing the likelihood of thunderstorms between 4 PM and 7 PM. These showers are expected to be brief but intense, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning in isolated areas.

Meteorological patterns suggest that the current weather is driven by pre-monsoon convective activity. Moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea through the Palakkad Gap, combined with rising surface temperatures, is contributing to instability in the atmosphere. This is further enhanced by the Western Ghats, where upward movement of air aids in cloud formation.

Experts note that rainfall during this period will not be widespread or continuous. Instead, the district is likely to experience localized thunderstorms, where some areas receive rain while others remain dry. Typically, cloud formation begins over the western regions and gradually moves eastward across the city.

In eastern parts of Coimbatore, including areas such as Kattur, rainfall may occur slightly later compared to western zones, and in some instances, showers may weaken before reaching these areas depending on cloud strength.

Residents may notice a rise in humidity and a “sticky” feeling during the afternoon hours ahead of rainfall. Sudden gusts of wind and rapid cloud movement are expected signs of approaching thunderstorms, usually indicating rainfall within a short duration.

Authorities advise the public to take precautions during peak afternoon heat and remain alert for sudden weather changes in the evening hours, particularly due to lightning and gusty winds associated with these thunderstorms.
