With the Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms occur in southern and interior parts of the State, many places across Tamil Nadu may get relief from the searing heat over the next couple of days.
Some parts of south Tamil Nadu and interior areas have already started experiencing rainfall.
A relief
This has come as a relief to people who were reeling under heat-wave-like conditions with the maximum temperature touching 39-40 degree Celsius.
In the 24-hour period that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, many places registered heavy rainfall, with Sivakasi receiving the highest volume of 13 cm followed by Papanasam in Tirunelveli district at 12 cm.
Chennai residents too rejoiced on Thursday as the murky sky raised hopes of sharp showers. However, only a few areas reported drizzle and mild showers. However, the overcast sky brought down the maximum temperature considerably: Nungambakkam recorded 32.9 degree Celsius and Meenambakkam 33.8 degree Celsius, which is lower by 4 degree Celsius than the normal. S. Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said a trough running from Karnataka to Comorin area has influenced the rains over the State.
This has helped moisture-laden cool easterly winds to move into land and caused rainfall. Chennai too is expected to get light rains till Saturday. The Meteorological Department forecasts that rain or thundershower will occur in some areas of the city during the evening or night hours.
The maximum temperature will be around 35 degree Celsius till Saturday.
