Sanitation Workers Continue Second Day Protest at Coimbatore Corporation Office

Contract sanitation workers of Coimbatore Corporation continued their sit-in protest for the second day, demanding a one-month salary as Diwali bonus. Over a hundred workers participated in the demonstration at the corporation office premises.

Coimbatore: The sit-in protest by contract sanitation workers at the Coimbatore Corporation office premises entered its second day on Tuesday. The demonstration, organized by the Athikara Kural Koottamaippu, is to emphasize their demand for a one-month salary as Diwali bonus.

While the first day saw participation from less than 30 workers, the second day (October 17) witnessed a significant increase with over a hundred workers joining the protest. The employees, sitting inside the corporation office compound, firmly stated that they would continue their protest until they meet the Corporation Commissioner in person and reach a resolution.

The workers questioned the reported offer of only Rs. 2000 as bonus, deeming it insufficient. They reiterated their demand for a full month's salary as a festival bonus.

In response to the ongoing protest, Corporation Deputy Commissioner Sivakumar held talks with the workers. However, the employees remained resolute, declaring that they would only withdraw their protest if granted a month's salary as bonus.
