Thanjavur RDO's Jeep attached

Thanjavur: As per the court order, the Jeep of Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Thanjavur Sub Division, was attached by the Principal Sub-Court here on Tuesday for the district administration’s failure to provide a compensation of Rs 15 lakh due to eight persons whose lands were acquired by the government in 1979 for the construction of New Housing Unit in Thanjavur.

According to sources, a total stretch of 30 acres of land was acquired near the new bus stand area for the construction of New Housing Unit in 1979. Some of the landowners, including Britto Xavier, resident of Tiruchy road,Thanjavur , and his relatives, were not content with the compensation awarded to them.

Britto Xavier, Gilbert Xavier, Irudhayaraj, Arogyamary, Arulanandam and Maria Mahendran, filed a case demanding more compensation.

Hearing their petitions, Principal Sub-Court awarded Rs 30 lakh along with interest to the petitioners. However, a compensation of Rs 15 lakh alone was provided to the land owners while the remaining Rs 15 lakh was not distributed.

Meanwhile, government filed an appeal before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. The HC, however, dismissed the petition and ordered the government to distribute the compensation amount awarded by the Principal Sub-Court.

Since the compensation was not provided in full to the land owners, Britto Xavier, an aggrieved land owner, filed an executive petition before the Principal Sub-Court, Thanjavur.

Disposing the petition on April 28, Principal Sub-Judge Sundarrajan issued orders to attach the official vehicle of Revenue Divisional Officer, Thanjavur.

Following which, court staff accompanied by the petitioner’s legal counsel R Govindaraj, attached the Jeep of Thanjavur RDO and took it to the court.
