BJP Protests Alleged Conspiracy to Demolish Plague Mariamman Temple Near Mettupalayam

BJP members protest against the alleged conspiracy to demolish the 100-year-old Plague Mariamman Temple in Karamadai, Coimbatore. The temple, located under a railway overbridge, faces demolition notices from highway authorities.

Coimbatore: BJP members and Hindu organizations have protested against an alleged conspiracy to demolish the century-old Plague Mariamman Temple in Anna Nagar, Karamadai Municipality, near Mettupalayam. The temple, situated under a railway overbridge on the roadside, has become the center of a controversy involving local political figures and government authorities.

The issue arose when a former DMK administrator, who owns an apartment near the temple, reportedly complained to the highway department officials that the temple was obstructing their building. Acting on this complaint, the highway department officials sent a notice to the temple administration, stating their intention to demolish the structure.

It is also alleged that the DMK Karamadai Town Secretary, Venkatesh, has issued a letter to the temple administration regarding the demolition. Upon learning this information, over a hundred people, including BJP and Hindu Munnani administrators, AIADMK councilor Vanitha, and DMK councilor Anitha, gathered in front of the temple to protest.

The protesters strongly condemned the move to demolish the temple, which they claim is not causing any inconvenience as it is situated in a secluded area under the overbridge. They accused the complainant of having constructed their building beyond the permitted height and encroaching upon additional land. The demonstrators criticized the municipal administration for not taking action against these alleged violations while proceeding with plans to demolish the temple.

The protestors warned of severe consequences if the temple were to be touched and demanded that the authorities withdraw the demolition notice. They accused the highway department and municipal officials of acting on the instigation of a former senior DMK administrator.

Following the protests by BJP and Hindu organizations, the highway department has temporarily postponed the demolition of the temple. The situation remains tense as local religious sentiments clash with administrative decisions in this small town near Coimbatore.
