In an outrageous act, a 55-year-old man who reportedly objected to two tipplers consuming liquor in public place was burnt alive by the duo here early today. Police arrested the tipplers, both hailing from Koradacheri area, in this connection.
The deceased, Sheik Alauddin, resident of Vandikkara street in Tiruvarur was sleeping in front of a launderer’s shop on the Old Nagapattinam road on Saturday night when the two youths came there and attempted to consume liquor.
Sheik Alauddin reportedly reprimanded the youths for consuming liquor in public place. Following which, a quarrel broke out between Sheik Alauddin and the two youths. Then, some local residents came to the rescue of Sheik Alauddin and chased the two tipplers away.
Sheik Alauddin was sleeping at 2 am when the two tipplers came there, poured petrol and set ablaze. Following which, Alauddin suffered severe burns. On hearing his screams, local residents rushed there but the two tipplers fled from there. Alauddin was admitted to the government medical college hospital in Tiruvarur where he succumbed to his burns.
Tiruvarur police registered a case and arrested the two tipplers identified as Murugan (37) of Nalil Onru village in Koradacheri taluk and Ulaganathan (35), resident of Pathur village in Koradacheri taluk on the charge murdering Alauddin by setting him ablaze.
