Minister Saminathan Releases Water from Amaravathi Dam, Tirupur for Irrigation

Minister M.P. Saminathan inaugurated water release from Amaravathi Dam for old and new ayacut areas in Tirupur and Karur districts. The 135-day water release will irrigate 47,117 acres of land.



Tirupur: Minister M.P. Saminathan inaugurated the release of water from the Amaravathi Dam near Udumalpet in Tirupur district for irrigation purposes in both old and new ayacut areas. The water will benefit agricultural lands in Tirupur and Karur districts.



According to Public Works Department officials, water will be released for 135 days, with 70 days of continuous flow and 65 days of stoppage. For the old ayacut areas in Tiruppur and Karur districts, water will be released through the river sluice at a rate of 700 cubic feet per second, not exceeding 4,233.60 million cubic feet.



The new ayacut areas will receive water through the main canal at a rate of 440 cubic feet per second, not exceeding 2,661.12 million cubic feet.



The water release will continue from today until February 9 next year, irrigating a total of 47,117 acres of land in Tiruppur and Karur districts. The total water to be released during this period is 6,894.22 million cubic feet.



The water release ceremony was attended by District Collector Christuraj, Udumalpet Revenue Divisional Officer Jaswant Kannan, Public Works Department officials, and farmers. It's worth noting that the Amaravathi Dam, with a total capacity of 90 feet, currently stands at 87.14 feet, with an inflow of 30 cubic feet.



Speaking to reporters after the event, Minister Saminathan stated that water has been released from the Amaravathi Dam for both old and new ayacut irrigation areas. He also mentioned that the surplus water from the Amaravathi Dam is currently joining the Cauvery River. The Minister added that in the future, check dams will be constructed in the Amaravathi irrigation areas to collect excess water.
