Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore Organize 'Pulse Heartathon' to Raise Awareness on Heart Health

Rotary District 3201 and 18 Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore held 'Pulse Heartathon' on September 22, 2024, to create awareness about heart problems in young adults. The event included a walk-jog-run activity and painting competition.

Coimbatore: On September 22, 2024, Rotary District 3201 and 18 Rotary Clubs of Coimbatore joined forces to organize the 'Pulse Heartathon', a unique event designed to raise awareness about heart problems affecting young adults aged 30 to 40 years. The event featured a walk-jog-run-jog-walk format, aimed at gradually increasing and decreasing participants' heart rates to promote cardiovascular health.

Rtn A. Godwin Maria Visuvasam, Rotary Youth Service Chairman of RID 3201, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "Heart attack mortality is increasing at a young age. To prevent this and create awareness, we organized the 'Pulse Heartathon' in collaboration with S.P.T. Hospital and Coimbatore District Athletic Association."

The event, which stretched from SPT Hospital to VOC ground, was inaugurated by Rotary District Governor Rotarian A.K.S. N. Sundaravadivelu and presided over by Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Saravanakumar. Over a thousand participants, including Rotary Club members, Rotractors, and volunteers, took part in the 5 km run.

Alongside the run, a painting competition was held for school children in two categories: classes 3-5 and 6-8. Participants who registered online and created the best artworks depicting heart-healthy lifestyles were awarded special prizes.

Dr. T. Subburaja, Managing Director of S.P.T. Hospital and a Rotarian, highlighted the alarming trend: "Currently, the death rate of young people due to heart disease is increasing in India. Globally, the number of people dying in the 30-40 age group has been rising due to lifestyle diseases. One in five people who die of a heart attack are under the age of 40."

The event saw participation from various dignitaries, including S.P.T. Hospital Chairman T. Susila, R I District 3201 General Secretary Rtn Subbu, District Coordinator Rtn Padmakumar, Assistant Governors of RID 3201 Coimbatore Zone, Presidents, Secretaries, and members of the 18 Rotary Clubs, as well as Mr. Srinivasan from the Coimbatore District Athletic Association.
